How to Measure Your Bedroom for a New Bed: UK Guide

by Bed Innovation 15 Jul 2026 0 comments

Falling for a bed online and finding out on delivery day that it won't fit through the door, or that it swallows the entire room once it's in, is one of the most avoidable mistakes in furniture buying. Twenty minutes with a tape measure before you order solves almost all of it. Here's how to do it properly.

Step 1: Measure the Room Itself

Measure the length and width of the usable wall space, not just the total floor area — account for door swings, window sills that protrude, radiators, and any built-in features like alcoves or chimney breasts that eat into the space you can actually use. According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the average UK double bedroom measures approximately 11ft x 11ft, which puts most bedrooms comfortably above the minimum for a double, borderline for a king, and below the ideal for a super king — a useful benchmark as you measure your own room against it.

Step 2: Apply the Clearance Rule

Leave at least 60cm of clear floor space on any side of the bed you'll regularly walk past — roughly the width of a person's shoulders, and the benchmark used by interior planners across the UK. On a tight budget of space, 45cm can work as an absolute minimum, though it starts to feel cramped for daily use. Allow slightly more, around 60–90cm, at the foot of the bed if you need to walk past it regularly.

Step 3: Don't Forget Bedside Furniture

A standard bedside table takes up 40–55cm of width and 35–45cm of depth, and it's the most commonly overlooked element in room planning — not because it's large, but because people assume it'll fit wherever there's a gap left over. Factor bedside table space into your total width calculation from the start, rather than treating it as a bonus if any room remains after the bed goes in.

Step 4: Measure the Bed, Not Just the Mattress

Bed frames add to mattress dimensions, sometimes substantially — upholstered frames with a padded headboard can add 10–20cm in each direction beyond the mattress size alone, and sleigh-style frames or footboards extend the footprint further still. Always check the full frame dimensions listed on the product page rather than assuming mattress size tells the whole story, particularly with storage beds where the base itself may be deeper than a standard divan.

UK Bed Sizes at a Glance

  • Single: 90cm x 190cm — suits children's rooms, guest rooms and compact spaces.
  • Small double: 120cm x 190cm — a good compromise for single sleepers wanting extra room, or smaller second bedrooms.
  • Double: 135cm x 190cm — the UK's most popular size, suiting rooms of roughly 10–12 square metres.
  • King: 150cm x 200cm — needs a bedroom of at least 12 square metres to avoid feeling cramped.
  • Super king: 180cm x 200cm — ideally a room of 14 square metres or more, given its footprint.

Our UK bed sizes guide has the complete breakdown in cm, inches and feet if you want exact figures for every size.

Step 5: Check the Delivery Route, Not Just the Room

A bed that fits the bedroom perfectly is no use if it can't get there — measure doorways, hallway widths, and staircases along the delivery route, and check ceiling height on stairs with tight turns. As a rule of thumb, your doorway needs to be at least 10cm wider than the bed's smallest dimension for anything that can't be turned in a tight space. Most divan and ottoman beds are delivered flat-packed in sections, which makes this less of an issue than with pre-assembled furniture — our bed assembly guide covers what to expect on delivery day.

A Simple Way to Visualise the Space

Before you order, mark out the bed's footprint on your floor using masking tape, including the full frame dimensions rather than just the mattress. Standing in the room with the outline taped down makes it far easier to judge whether a size actually works than trying to picture it from a product photo alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much clearance do I need around a bed?

At least 60cm on any side you'll regularly walk past, with 45cm as an absolute minimum in a tight room.

What size room do I need for a super king bed?

Ideally 14 square metres or more to keep proper clearance on all sides and room for bedside furniture.

Do I need to measure doorways as well as the bedroom?

Yes — measure the full delivery route including doorways, hallways and staircases, particularly for pre-assembled furniture. Most divan and ottoman beds arrive flat-packed, which reduces this risk.

Should I measure the mattress size or the frame size?

Always measure the full frame dimensions, since upholstered headboards and footboards can add 10–20cm beyond the mattress measurements alone.

What's a good way to visualise how a bed will fit?

Mark the bed's full footprint on your floor with masking tape and stand in the room — it gives a far more accurate sense of scale than picturing it from a product photo.

Final Thoughts

Measuring properly takes twenty minutes and prevents the two most common bed-buying mistakes: a frame that won't fit through the door, and a bed that dominates the room once it's in. Measure the room, apply the 60cm clearance rule, check the full delivery route, and you'll know exactly what will work before you order. If you're not sure which size suits your room, our team at the Dewsbury showroom is happy to help you work it out.
